Presenter: Scott Wooge
MEETING NOTES
1. Location: The building is located on the east side of Portland
Street, almost directly behind Columbia Regional Hospital. If coming
from the north, from Keene Street (the street on which the hospital is
located) turn left on Berrywood, then right on Portlan and you are
there. Enter through the north door on the front of the building. The
meeting room is just inside the door to the left.
2. Business Meeting and Election: Business meeting will be held at the
beginning of the meeting. Nominations will be accepted from the floor
and must have written approval of the nominee if the nominee is not
present. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of the present
officers for re-election, with the exceptin of treasurer Karen Webster,
who has indicated that she will be unable to serve another term due to
other committments. Kathy Nichols and Karen Philp have indicated that
they wish to run for treasurer. Nominees will have the opportunity to
briefly speak for themselves or have someone speak for them about their
qualifications, why they would like to serve, etc.
3. Program: Even though the program is about the Pilot Achievement
Awardment program, the information is also important for crew members to
be aware of. We all know pilots cannot achieve anything without their
crew to help them! At a later meeting we will have information about the
Crew Achievement program. Individuals in both programs must present
documentation to achieve the various levels, which is one reason it is
important to be knowledgeable about both.
The presenter, Scott Wooge, provided the following biographical
information:
Scott Wooge was born on a diary farm near Forest City, Iowa. Forest City
is
also famous for being the home of Winnebago motor homes. The farm
produced
milk, beef cattle, and hogs for the masses. Getting up well before sunrise
was part of the routine. Now, that practice carries over to ballooning.
Snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATV's, and snow skiing were some activities he
enjoyed during his time 'on the farm'. Other events taking up time while
growing up were football, baseball, wrestling, and attempting to get a
ball
through a hoop.
Scott was introduced to ballooning in 1983 after graduating from college
when a co-worker needed crew for their hobby. He and his wife Cynthia
started crewing for several local balloonists in the Iowa City, Iowa area
until they moved to Champaign, IL. During their time in Champaign, they
helped start the balloon club in the central Illinois (BAGI-Balloon
Association of Greater Illinois). They both pursued getting qualified to
fly balloons along with purchasing their first balloon. Now located in
St.
Louis, Scott & Cynthia now have three balloons to fly. They are named
Butterfly, Seeing Stars, and Mini-Me.
Flying 321 miles to be crowned the Balloon Federation of America's (BFA)
'Long Jump' Champion in 1996 was a milestone in Scott's ballooning career.
Also, flying at 18,000 feet with a visibility of 80 miles will be hard to
forget. Now he is the Chairman for the BFA's Pilot Achievement Award
Program. In the past years, Scott has been on the board of Directors for
local balloon clubs and presented topics at safety seminars.
Scott's non-ballooning work activity involves organizing computer projects
for a Fortune 50 company (a 18 year employee). Cynthia is a R&D Manager
for
a St. Louis based chemical company. Any remaining non-ballooning time is
occupied coaching his two girls' basketball and softball teams, learning
new
computer networking ideas, and trying to squeeze in a round of golf.
