Although Saturday morning's flight was weathered out, the afternoon wind finally slowed down enough to fly. We met at the balloon port at 6:00 and had a brief pilot briefing then proceeded to the launch site and target for measuring.
The target was an intersection in the reactor field valley. As we (the scoring officials) moved toward the target we could see Gary Whitby and Roger McCullum take off a little too far south to hit the target but they didn't do bad considering that they didn't even know where it was! In the valley we were waiting in to score the balloons we waited patiently but were not disappointed in the least as the first balloon came over the hill. Gary Sines flying the KOMU balloon came just south of the target but too high for a very accurate drop. Then George flew by even further south. Dennis tried a higher approach but didn't drop down soon enough and ended up north of the target.
Our former secretary, Deon, however, kept it low enough and slow enough to get in an accurate drop. Well, reasonably accurate... .46 Kilometers according to Fred's GPS. But that was close enough to earn the honor of first place in the first race! Plus about $35.00 in side bets!
Upon retrieval of all aerostats and 'nauts we returned to the bp after ordering pizzas, Burgers or Roast Chicken ...ask Deon... and enjoyed a cool evening of sitting around being cool! If you missed it we missed you but we may have a club flight on our next meeting date (May 14) so watch the web site! Herb hombc-announce Archive ]
